After its initial beginnings as a Saturday school in Montebello teaching the Armenian language and culture, Armenian Mesrobian School was founded in 1965. The Art of Learning is not an ordinary private school. It grew out of a unique partnership between an educational therapist, an artist, dedicated teachers, students who want to learn, and parents who dared to believe that learning differences could be surmounted in an atmosphere of care and individualized attention to their children. The Art of Learning Academy accepts students who do not do well in traditional school environments, large environments, and large classrooms. We meet in the cozy home environment of an ample house in Northridge that has a lovely garden and pool. We also have a 1200 square-foot, on-site, fully equipped art studio, where students who love art can learn to work with innumerable materials and tools. Ours is a small school of warmth and intimacy in which the learning experience takes place either one-on-one or in small groups with less than ten students per teacher and a paraprofessional aide.

The mission of Aseltine School is to establish a partnership with "at-risk" youth in which we imaginatively challenge, support and prepare them to gain better understanding and insight into the barriers that have limited their access to "mainstream" school and community; develop the skills, knowledge and resources necessary to overcome these barriers; develop the self-esteem that transforms fatalism and self-doubt into purposeful action; and make an independent and productive transition back into school, employment and community.

Our mission at Atkinson Youth Services School is to provide a safe supportive environment where students are empowered to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens. Atkinson Youth Services School is a non-public school that provides specialized instruction to students with an Emotional Disturbance Disability and/or Specific Learning Disability. The program also serves Mental Retardation, Autism, Other Health Impaired, and Speech and Language designations. The program is designed to stimulate children to want to learn, to problem solve with others, and develop independent skills. Aviva Family and Children's Services is a non-profit, multi-service agency serving the greater Los Angeles community. Aviva provides care and treatment to abandoned, neglected, abused and at-risk youth and their families. Services include residential treatment, community mental health services, family preservation, after-school care, special education and foster family placement. The mission of Aviva Family and Children's Services, founded in 1915 as Hamburger Home, is to provide professional help to emotionally distressed, abused and neglected adolescents, children at-risk and their families, to develop skills and strengths necessary to enhance their individual and family functioning.
