I can tell you that schools, across the board, saw significant applicant increases last year and there doesn’t seem to be any decline this year. So, since schools are not increasing how many students they accept, the admission process will be more competitive. So it’s not about decreasing the number of Chinese students, more so that there are simply more students vying for a finite set of spots.

As a consultant and parent of a student at the Fay School, I would suggest you continue to support your son’s extracurricular activities and provide academic enrichment opportunities in the form of camps, visiting museums, aquariums, etc and encourage reading for pleasure.

There is no “one important trait” that gain admission to Andover (or any competitive school for that matter). Boarding schools take a comprehensive approach to evaluating students, so there’s no one thing that will get you accepted. Students don’t need to have perfect tear scores/grades, but they do need to show competency. Students must also demonstrate that they have the emotional intelligence to navigate boarding schools because you need more than just academic prowess to be successful in boarding schools. Finally, I can assure you that every student at a competitive school possesses some skill, activity or interest that will positively impact the campus community.
