Second, you mentioned that you would want to go California. I advise you that the location of the school is at this stage of your high school experience (you are going to be a junior) is not that important. Your focus is to find a right school that helps you to go to a better college if you transfer.
Third, although it is late to make a new application to a good school, there are still chances to get accepted to a better school. This just needs more works to find it. Application process for many good schools is officially over, nevertheless, some of these schools are still looking for good candidates for their schools if students are attractive. Prime Global

Coed vs. Single Sex School
In Single Sex Schools, many students find it easier to focus on academics when they aren’t distracted by members of the opposite sex. Others may find it easier to participate actively in classes where everyone is the same sex. Research studies show that girls aged 11 to 18 years do better in math and the sciences at single sex schools. Boys do better at many subjects. Although it may be easier for students to participate actively and do well academically at a single sex institution, the real world is not single sex. It may prove difficult for students from single sex schools to adjust to a co-ed work atmosphere after they graduate.

A:
Hi,
It is always hard to decide which grade to apply to. Professionals always recommend sending students to a lower grade if the family is ok with that.
Benefit of applying to a lower grade is that your child has more time to prepare for college. Usually when students first arrive in American schools, they need a semester or two to adjust to the new environment, and then prove their ability and worth to the school will have another year to prepare for TOEFL and SAT, and then start writing application during the summer after 11th grade ends. Also one academic year gives one more summer vacation and that's a good time for students to build their resume; do some community services, internship, work, etc.
So if your son goes into school as an 11th grader, he won't have enough time to prepare for good universities.
In America, students don't care if one is a year older or younger. American education teaches people to be acceptive of all people. Plus, when students go off to college, age level is very mixed up; students are from late 10s to even 40s and 50s.
For SSAT. Your child is applying to high school, so he will have to take the Upper SSAT.
So study hard and hope you go to the best school that fits your child's interest and dreams.

Hi,
Thank you for your question.
Sorry for the late response. I wanted to check on their current admission situation so I've called and talked to the admission officers.
Out of Trinity, Collegiate, Brearley, Horace Mann, and Dalton, Horace Mann is the only school that is interested in taking international students and it's the only school that gives I-20.
Trinity School, Collegiate School, Brearley School, Horace Mann, and Dalton School are all very good day schools that run from K-12 in NY State. All of these schools are very hard to get into even as an American resident. Most of these schools do not give out I-20 form, which you need to apply for student Visa F1, and only accept residents of NY, CT, NJ, or other states close by. To apply to these schools, the student and parents need to be American residents.
So if you are not American resident, you might want to think of other day schools that provide I-20 or boarding schools near New York.
These five schools are open for applications only for 9th grade for high school (regardless of international or domestic residents), and if the students want to apply for 10&11th grade, they will be wait listed, and they don't accept students in 12th grade.
The only international students that are currently in their school are ones that the family moved to NY and has residence card.
Also, most of the 9th grade students just move up from 8th grade within the same school so opening space for new student is very slim.

hi,
First of all, there are three most famous art boarding schools in America. Walnut Hill School for Arts in Massachusetts, Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, and Idyllwild Arts Academy in California. None of these schools specifically offer fashion design classes.

|
2012-09-04 17:40:07 |
Hi.
First of all, there are no specific schools that offer fashion design classes even in the best visual art boarding schools.
Secondly, switching school in junior year is never a good idea. Junior year is when you have to study your hardest and prepare for college, and when you switch school, you will need time to re-adjust and 90%of the students struggle in the first semester after moving schools and if your grades drop, it will not look good from a college point of view.
However, in every school including art and non-art boarding schools usually have self-governed course where you can design a class for yourself. First, you have to talk to the academic dean, who usually helps to plan your classes about your idea then you have to come up with a proposal, and you study on a particular subject by yourself for one semester and usually write a midterm and final report and a teacher will grade your project.
Fine arts have no limits. I know one student from Parsons Fine Arts who designed and made a dress for her Thesis show. So if you talk to your teachers, they might allow you to work on a project that you can design and make clothes.
Lastly, fashion design is never late to start in college. So for now, I recommend you to study hard and sketch a lot whenever you can and prepare well for college that offer fashion design majors. Every fashion school is run differently so check before choosing one school to spend your life for four years. And if you want to take some classes during summer break or winter break, contact us and we will recommend you some art training/ portfolio academies in China that American art school professors come and teach during summer.
Prime global consulting.

This question should be understood based on what education plans you have for your child. If your child does not have TOEFL score and going to be in 11th grade, your child's chance for a better university will be limited. Your child's grade as junior will be somewhat less than what you expect, and your child also should prepare some tests such as SAT and TOEFL for university entrance. Probably the junior year where you child would take will be the most challenging year in terms of preparing a better college with taking care of all necessary requirements for college entrance. If your child is not interested in applying some of most competitive colleges in US, then there should be some other ways that your child can land on good universities while your child can start as a junior. Please start to plan a specific educational plan for your child with your school counselor. Or contact professional education counselor as soon as possible, learn all possible options, and choose them wisely.

There are some good schools with strong liberal arts programs. However, I am not sure how you understand the meaning of 'liberal arts' in your question. Usually the schools with strong liberal arts programs require a very good command of English, especially language skills in writing, reading, and speaking. Students are expected to read and write a lot. Also these schools require high SSAT scores as a part of entrance requirements.
Unfortunately, there is almost no school without some Chinese students. The elite schools typically limit the number of Chinese students and this eventually increases competition among Chinese students as well. It would be best for you to find some professional consultants who can do some research for you in this matter.

Off campus accommodation is an alternative solution for dormitory or homestay program. The numbers of boarding schools are limited and the applicants for the boarding school increases, and the day schools which want to accept students do not have dormitory also want to receive students. Either school offer off campus dormitory and other educational companies provide some boarding options to students. The most important thing is to study about this option and find out how it works. There are always some good boarding programs and the bad ones. Choose wisely!

If your daughter is looking at several top boarding schools, given that situation, she might have some difficulties to get in. I also think that focusing on SSAT while giving up TOEFL would give some advantages. I recommend you to do more active research on possible schools and requirements of those schools.

Yes. In my humble opinion, school GPA is the most significant criteria in the process of application. I believe that almost all outstanding schools have the same or similar attitude. If you child has a lower GPA, that is a serious problem. You need to get honest evaluations on your child's academic performance for counselors and prepare accordingly.

Taking twice is fine. Schools know the nature of tests and they will be able to see your child's all scores. Do not be afraid of telling your child true scores. Rather try to help your child to get the best scores based on his or her ability. Please remember that SSAT score is only one of several admission criteria. There are always some other evidences that you might inform that your child is special to the schools other than SSAT score. Please find and work on this aspect as well.

It is ok to contact to schools for follow-ups and confirmation. You can contact the school regular basis, for example, once or twice in a month. Please contact, if possible, the person who has engaged with you in the process of application because she or he know you. Please do not ask others so called 'influential persons' to call the school on behalf of your admission. You do not want to give an impression that you use other person's power to gain admission. In general, the schools absolutely do not like that. Remember they do have tons of Chinese student applications. That type of actions will add to your application another reason not to accept you.

Transferring as 12th grader is not a good idea. Rather, if you want to come to Manhattan, please work hard to find out colleges and universities near or in New York city. I do not know why you want to transfer at this stage. Without compelling reasons for transfer, it is not a smart move.

Three schools are equally outstanding schools and very popular in the West. Their academic courses are rigorous and demanding. Educational approaches are slightly different, for example, Webb somewhat emphasizes development of leadership aspect, while Stevenson is rather trying to teach ethically balanced education 'knowledge and practice. However, if you try to rank these schools, you will fail because there is no objective criteria judge them and produce ranking. Also, the quality of education at each school will be determined by who you are as a student. That means you should find out what kind of a student you are and which school is really a match school for you. Please do not rank them based on average SAT scores or numbers of IVY accepted students. That does not help you at all. Instead, go deeper and dig more information from school while trying to learn about the school.

Unfortunately, thanksgiving is one of the biggest holidays in USA and very few people or organizations would work or open for this time. This means that it is totally up to students to create some creative schedules. Few groups are trying to develop programs and we are one of those groups. 1。

1. I am not sure you meant for phone card or phone. Having a phone card would be a good idea for emergency situation. Also, having a cell phone is a good idea too. Each school has its own policy to use a cell phone in school hours and a student is usually free to use their phones. The question is how a student can get it and use it wisely. An international student who is a minor without a good credit history, she might have a difficulty to get one unless she pays in full for the device from the beginning.
2. It is strongly recommended that an international student prepares a laptop computer. schools may recommend some options too. Check with schools for their computer or technology policy. schools such as Cushing has the first rate computer program and students are required to use laptops for their works and study.
3. a translation device could be a good tool for study. However, please be careful when your child uses it at school. Please make sure that your child follow school policy. Some teachers see this a helpful tool for international students, but some see as a cheating device, while thinking this device might be unfair to other American students in classroom. In the past years, schools become more weary about these device because some of international students used this in tests and exams more than they were guided to use. My recommendation is "always be careful with this translation device."

Recently American colleges and universities become more familiar with IB system and tend to highly honor this system. if a student can receive a IB diploma, that would certainly be helpful since not all high schools students in IB schools are receiving the diploma. At the same time, it would not hurt if you work on some of AP exams and get high scores since schools with IB tend not to offer AP courses and students can take their own AP tests.
If you are applying very specific majors such engineering or Pre-Med, I would certainly suggest you to take some of additional advanced courses or exams such as AP exams. However, a student can have other options such as specific American college courses through online or summer terms at colleges. The most important thing is to prove that a student is capable to manage a college level of works and that can be shown through various ways such as APs, college courses, internships, research opportunities and other interesting works.

An answer to this question depends on what a student expects from his/her education in the States and how he/she has been preparing for this plan. a typical starting point is to ask a student some of questions such as:
What kind of colleges/universities is a student looking for?
What are admission criteria for these universities?
What are the best schools for preparing a student to apply these schools?
What exams or tests are a student preparing for high schools?
Then a student should look into exams such as TOEFL, SSAT, SAT and evaluate their current GPA and academic skills.
If a student plans to apply to high schools as 10th grade, especially top private high schools, schools usually requires TOEFL 100 out of 120, SSAT (if they requires) 90%, top GPA. and MOST IMPORTANTLY, a student have about 4-6 months prep time to bring the above conditions to school upon application. There might not be enough time. However, a good counselor could guide you carefully and effectively.

1.This depends on schools where you apply. Yes, some of school (usually top private boarding schools have strict deadlines due to high application volume, especially from China) will not review application materials if scores are not submitted. It is called 'incomplete staus.' It is therefore very important for students to meet the deadlines with test score submission for applying to this type of school. There will be disadvantages for the late applications.
2Yes, you can decide on when you send your score. For more information, you must check SSAT's score reporting service.
3 This depends on student's preparedness and readiness. Receiving a good score from SSAT requires certain amount of time to prepare since English is not the first language for Chinese students. Also, the type of questions in SSAT, especially verbal sections, requires strong logical thinking skills . This means that Asian students need some time to get familiar with this types of questions. I would doubt that this skill will develop in one or two month of preparation.
4This also depends on schools. Some school would take the average scores from multiple test scores, some would take the best scores. However, I would suggest students to prepare enough before taking exams and perhaps taking more than three times would not be necessary.

I understand your concerns! However, transferring to another school, especially academically strong one in USA, would be a great challenge to a student and even family. Typically, junior year (11th) would be the toughest and most challenging year for a high school students because a student must maintain high GPA, excellent extra-activities, high scores from tests such as SAT 1, SAT subject test (if colleges require), or TOEFL. Without proper preparations, a student usually suffers a lot, especially in the junior year even to an excellent American student.
Also, definitely, it is too late to get accepted to a good school at this time. All good schools have already registered new students and this is time to prepare a new school season. If there is a space available at the school, you might want to do your own research on that school before you go to the school (please check whether school is a better school or not in terms of sending its graduates to some of best colleges and universities than your current school)
My sincere advice for you if you aim to one of top 30 liberal arts colleges (I really admire you are considering liberal arts colleges!!) is to find someone who can guide you in the process of college applications and give you effective counseling to you in order to accomplish your goal. You might still have a good chance especially if you try to liberal art colleges while you stay in your current school!

4.Majoring computer science or computer engineering is a special track that colleges and universities tend to look into student applications more carefully. Colleges and universities recognize that academic majors students choose would often change after they arrive the school. However, a student who applies for computer major, more so for computer engineering, should present that she or he has enough experience about computer in college applications and that experience could positively work on behalf of applicants. I strongly recommend that a student intending to major computer science or computer engineerig would have some related experience with this field before applying for this major!

Your first step is to go to guidance office at your child's school. The guidance or college counseling officer at the school usually have a lot very useful information about aptitude testings and career development. They also might suggest your child to take some professional tests as well. 2.There are some available tools for student major choice or career development.

1. Yes, you should submit recommendation letters and transcripts when submitting an application form.
2. Yes, you need to get all 9th grade transcripts from different schools.
3. Yes, you should have official transcripts and recommendation letters with a school seal.
4. If possible, recommendation letters should come from teachers who currently teach the child. Nevertheless, recommendation letters from the previous schools would not hurt either. The important point is that a teacher who knows the student well enough should write a recommendation letter.
5. Leaving teacher's phone number would be fine with permission from him/her. Contact information with an email address should be good enough for further communication.

An academic curriculum at Canadian high schools is usually a bit different from the one at American high schools. If you apply to one of American universities, then I would recommend you to consider American high school. From my past experience, even when the best students in Canadian high schools are transferred to an American high school, they tended to struggle, especially in subjects such as advanced math and science courses which lead to lower grades.
You can also prepare university admission process while you are still at a Chinese high school. What really matter is how to prepare and present well about who you are to universities in the application process. This might need some time, energy, and of course careful planning. I suggest you to start as soon as possible by reviewing your current courses and by looking into possible universities that might interest you. Also consider to get some professional advice from school guide counselors or professional college counselors. This assistance would be very helpful as you prepare for college admission.

I can feel that your child is an excellent student! Now you must choose which way is the best way to prepare your child to get accepted to Top 10 universities, either by graduating from an international school here in China or by graduating from an American school.
Honestly, either way, your child will have to work so hard since getting an admission from top 10 universities, especially as a Chinese international student, would be terribly hard.
Becoming 11th grader at American high school would also be very risky because international students tend to suffer with their grades in their first year at a new American school, and grades as 11th would be considered as the most significant ones that show student's intelligence, rigor, willingness and focus by many top universities. Schools that know this usually recommends international students to lower one grade down.
Also there is a good chance for your child to get accepted to one of top universities while your child stays at a current school. Your child should have a very careful college application plan, starting now! Please find someone who can give advice in this matter. These professionals might help you greatly. So, choice is yours!

Your child is 9th grade. My question is whether or not your child plans to go to American private school at this time. If you plan to do that, you need to prepare SSAT with high percentile especially for applying some of top private schools. If your child is not applying to private secondary schools, but planning to apply to universities and colleges later, you might want to focus on language acquisition such as TOEFL and other tests such as SAT I/ SATII, AP. Preparing these tests would take a great deal of time and energy through high school years while maintaining good GPA at a current competitive school.

When schools ask that question, the only purpose of asking the question is to find out who you are. You need to tell them about you honestly. If you have big awards, that is great, but if you don't have them, please don't be discouraged. You can find something different and unique about you through small stuff as you reflect who you are.

Episcopal or Anglican Church is the Church of England. When the Catholic Church ruled the most of Europe, the Kings of England decided to revolt the authority of the Catholic Church and found their own church in the sixteenth century.
Episcopal Church has a very strong tradition of emphasizing on human reason, while understanding that is a true gift from God, as a tool to reveal God's grace and works in human history. Therefore, any episcopal schools and academic institutions tend to focus on academic success which encourages human curiosity and reason power. No wonder to see many great universities in England starting from this Anglican tradition.
Episcopal schools, private and secondary schools in USA, England, and other countries continue to foster this tradition and have been known for their academic strength.
Religious schools tend to offer more ethical education based on their religious belief along with academic curriculum. The type of their ethical/religious education at religious school varies. I recommend students and their parents to look into schools carefully before making the final decision.

The value of ESL has been proved by many language scholars and researchers. The question is how this ESL program can work with each individual student. In reality, some students are successful with ESL, while building a strong foundation for further studies, and others feel ESL is not necessary for them. Thus, it really depends on student's readiness for further studies.
If a student is not ready enough (of course this can be seen with the lack of TOEFL scores, SSAT, or other testing results), a school usually decides what students should take. I would recommend parents and students to respect school decision especially on language evaluation unless you have some other proofs on language acquisition that students can present. ESL for students with lack of language no matter how long it would take could be very helpful.

Yes, there are several boarding schools outstanding equestrian programs in USA. Applying to these boarding schools still requires your son to submit Test scores such as SSAT/TOEFL with excellent GPA. As you might know, Chinese applicants to those boarding schools continue to face severe competitions even though your son's experience with equestrian program will definitely help.
Some of top universities such as Colgate, Standford, Smith, USC, Princeton, UPenn and Washington University have very competitive equestrian programs and always look for students like your son. I recommend you to search which boarding schools has strong ties with these universities and success with state and national competition as well.

I understand that you are a sophomore now and plan to transfer to another school in next spring as a junior. For your question, yes, there would be some schools that can receive you for spring semester. Second, I would not suggest you to take this path except you are in any emergency situation. If you stay one more semester as a junior, then you are applying to colleges. Transferring as a junior in the middle of year would not look good to colleges either, and you are going into a different school which might have different culture, attitude, grading system, new friends and all other new stuff. That requires a serious adjustment process. Even any good student would take some time to adjust and this adjustment would take some of your very precious energy that is supposed to be spent on your preparation for colleges in your junior year. My recommendation is rather to select a good college counselor and work hard for your college application options while you are staying at the current school. This can give you a better chance for you to go to a better college later.

If you do not have TOEFL or SSAT scores, your choice for boarding schools will be very limited. Also, competitive boarding schools do not consider your application. That is a very good question. As you might know, getting an admission letter as 9th grade from elite boarding schools become extremely difficult. This year also proves this trend. One way to improve your chance to go a top boarding/private school is to start early in a good US school. When elite boarding schools usually do not have ESL courses and other boarding schools usually prefer to have students who already have obtained English language proficiency and done with cultural adjustment. This preference can be interpreted that such top boarding schools can welcome students who have already experienced American school and curriculum. Thus, my recommendation is to find a school and go early. And many Chinese parents begin to realize how important this is. You can contact us for more discussion.

Another option is to go to a American high school. Certainly taking this way has some advantages, yet still other disadvantages too. You might repeat one more year to improve your academic profile (this is quite ok with many high schools and even colleges) and also need to adjust a new environment, in which I often discover that an international student would suffer in terms of grade and social life. Schools you mentioned, I would consider, are generally average or above average schools. But they can also send their graduates to some of top universities. If you need more information on these schools, Please contact us, we can start some researches on them.

You have basically two options. First, you can prepare to directly apply American Universities from China while attending a current high school. In this case, you have only 17th months to accomplish good SAT and TOEFL scores, excellent GPA, outstanding Extra Curricular activities if you aims to apply to top universities in USA. Although it sounds somewhat easy, actually to build a quality application to top universities is quite time consuming and takes a lot of energy. You can surely focus on this path.

Please offer me some ideas about your criteria to judge schools. People have different standards for evaluating schools and every school has different characters as well. Of course your child is different from others. That is the reason why a good match is very important. What are important things for your child? College acceptance, friendly environment, top facilities, or numbers of teachers, or numbers of AP classes? A good matching requires some works to do. Again, what are important to you when you evaluate the schools?

This is an interesting question. It is true that the schools can ask donations and they can start financial campaign as soon as your child gets accepted to your school. Whether or not you will donate, or how much you will donate entirely depends on you. The idea that because you does not give any donation, the school will discriminate is wrong. If any school discriminate a child because of that, please let me know. Parents and students also have the right to ask questions. I do not how much they ask or how they ask, I know that sometimes, parents of students works for this financial campaign together for their children's schools. Of course, you will decide when you want to donate, not the school.

If you son is a Canadian citizen, your son will be an international student who needs F-1 Visa in order to study at American school. As a Canadian citizen, you son does not need entry visa such as tourist visa, however, I believe, your son needs to obtain student visa just as other international students. It means that you son has some limits to go American public schools.

It seems that your son applied to junior boarding schools and did not get any offer. I am sorry to hear that. As I discover every year, the competition among Chinese students for boarding schools become fiercely competitive. I am sure that your son was one of good candidates, however schools just could not have them all. Since your son is 6th grader, I encourage you not to be stressed out, rather to try to find some alternatives. Your son might go to a good private school (day or public) which has a good record of sending its graduates to top private high schools. Starting and studying early in a good American junior school (6-8), as far as I am concerned, has some definite advantages when your son applies to the private/boarding school later. It is not too late. And you do not have to be discouraged. Or you might seek some advice from education professionals.

I encourage you, if possible, to change your perspective a little. As matter of fact, it is about going to a top or selective university four years later. I suggest you to search some of excellent days schools which have the same or better record of sending its graduates to top universities. You can have some advantages even when you transfer one year later from this top day school to a top boarding school because top schools recognize other top schools' reputation and academic curriculum, and often welcome the accomplished students at other top tier schools. Start your study somewhere, complete your course there or prepare the transfer next year, but please definitely be in an environment that helps you be more competive for admission in USA, if you plan to go to a selective university later.

It is so sad that an excellent candidate such as you did not get any offer. I am constantly hearing from top boarding schools that there are simply too many Chinese students this year, and top boarding schools are having such a hard time to pick students. Imagine that more than 200 applicants for four spots that are allocated for Chinese students. It is apparent that even students from big cities such as Beijing and Shanghai are competing with other outstanding Chinese students from other areas. Also it seems that postponing one year would not help much either. All outstanding international students who are currently at junior boarding schools such as Cardigan Mountain and Fay or other top private schools who are already in USA will apply as the 10th grade next year to the schools who would offer fewer space for 10th grade.

Third,if you transfer, then it is also a new environment where you should start all over again, new friends, new housing situation, and new teachers. That must be tough. And most likely you will go to a college somewhere else again one year later. The first semester at senior year is the busiest time for you to create applications, to take tests, and to maintain good grades for colleges as well. In this situation, adding another pressure to you such as adjusting to a new environment would not be very practical unless you have some exceptional reasons.
I suggest you rather to take good college counseling and guidance while staying at the current school and that will possibly bring a better result to you.

Transferring to another school as a senior is usually not recommended. There are a few reasons why. First, as you mentioned, there are not so many schools that allow this type of transfer. Honestly, schools would possibly see that you would want to receive a high school diploma after just a year of stay and that does not sound good to them. Schools care more about students' growth as they become valuable part of their communities throughout entire school years. Secondly from college counseling point of view, this transfer does not any give positive view on you either, unless you present exceptional reasons why you transferred to a particular school at the senior year, and still this makes college admission office wonder why you did. Also, most elements of college application preparation will be done by your junior year; your transcript in junior year will be more important than that in senior year and your activities until junior year will be considered more as colleges review your file.

It is always a joy to see that there is a mother who plans early. Finding a summer program that is 'not all about play' for 7th grade student is a good start. And it will take some time to find the right one. Summer program that focuses on academics alone is not healthy and all academic summer programs also have some 'play time' as well. So 'playing' is not bad as long as academics and 'playing' is well balanced. Some selective academic programs requires language skills and have a longer process while other typical summer programs are 'rolling admission program.' You might want to do some research on summer camps based on your child's interest, ability, academic plan for future as soon as possible because usually these selective summer camps have deadlines and are closing soon. Perhaps you can give more details on what kind of plans you have for your child, not just saying that you need 'academic' programs, but ask more questions such as 'what kind of academic subjects my child is interested,' and 'what levels my child is in for that particular subject', and 'how my child could be improved.' And then perhaps we or other counselors can narrow down on some summer camp options. Prime Global

This is an interesting question! For your son to go to a good boarding school, it is certain that you will help him to prepare with tests, GPA, and other activities. For your question about buying house and going to the public school, there are some different approaches available. One thing for sure is that in order for you son to go to public school, you should establish 'a legal status' in USA possibly through different methods. It is not true that just buying a house guarantees your son to go to the public school. You might need to consult with professionals on this matter for further development. Prime Global.

If you are asking which is a better school in terms of college admission, it is very hard to answer. However, Rutgers Prep is an older school (I believe it is over 200 years of history) and thus is more nationally recognized. Both schools have a very strong academic program and good college counseling office. Given the fact that admission to IVY universities becomes more challenging even for elite private schools, both schools have experienced decreasing number of IVY accepted students recently. Still, Rutgers Prep has maintained about 7-10 % of IVY acceptance rate. Although both are excellent schools, with a longer history, national recognition, more traditional academic curriculum, it seems that Rutgers could have slight advantage over Winchester in terms of college acceptance to the selective universities and colleges. However, please understand that the quality of education provided by school is not entirely relying on college acceptance rate, it is rather dependent on how much students can grow and be satisfied at schools. It could be absolutely true that Winchester will be the best school choice if your child is happy there. Please consider carefully all aspects of schools, not only college acceptance rate, and make the best choice for your child. Good luck!

Congratulations! these schools are by all means wonderful schools with great reputations, especially in the areas where these schools are located. Winchester, if i am correct, is a very good Pittsburg school with over 100 years of history in Western Pennsylvania and Rutgers Prep is nearby Rutgers University, which is a flagship university in New Jersey.

Transferring to another school at the end of 10th grade is not an easy decision to make. From a college counseling point of view, if you are not challenged enough at the current school and want to transfer, or if there are other inevitable reasons, then usually your motivation will be justified. Other than those reasons, it is recommended to remain at the current school and graduate with good grades. If you still want to transfer, then you might want to consider the following things especially if you plan to apply to selective colleges later.
First, if possible, transfer to a more competitive high school with more rigorous academic programs. Even catholic high schools varies in terms of academic rigor, independent catholic schools (not diocesan schools) tend to have more challenging academic programs and their admission process is more selective. Thus, these schools tend to have higher SAT average scores and to send their graduates to more competitive colleges. Please keep in mind that there are still good diocesan schools too. I am curious which type of school you currently attend at this time. Or you can apply to non sectarian private schools which do not have any association with religious denominations. Many boarding schools are in this category.

Still if you cannot find anything inside the school, then you might want to go and find something meaningful outside the school. This could be more complicated since you are at the boarding school. You might need to seek a permit from the school, to arrange your own transportation, and to find other logistics to support your projects. I think that your idea to leave the school and to live with a host family (I am not sure if your school would allow this) for community service is not wise because you are there to experience the wholesome experience that a boarding school can provide. I am sure there are plenty opportunities for you to participate meaningful activities which also boost your college application nearby Stanford University while you are staying at your school. Good luck! Prime Global.

Usually a good boarding school has a student service office (or guidance office) that can offer useful advice on volunteering works and other meaningful activities at school and beyond especially in relations with college application process. Student groups or faculty members also would organize some volunteer works in the school as well. My first advice is to find or to even organize your own volunteer activities in school while finding some supports from the school. Please remember it is not easy to start something new and even to continue to develop. Many colleges nevertheless would like to see this type of projects led by students, and particularly are interested in what kind of volunteer works a student participates and in what capacity he/she participates. Clearly it is not about the size of organization or the number of volunteer works you involve, but about how much you put your hearts in particular projects. Please start anything even that is small within the school community if possible.
